Lamborghini Asterion Not Heading to Production: CEO

The Lamborghini Asterion plug-in hybrid “hyper cruiser” will remain firmly in theoretical territory.

The Italian automaker has no plans to put the hybrid exotic concept into production according to CEO Stephan Winkelmann. In fact, the only way the Asterion will become a reality is without the hybrid powertrain according to Winkelmann, who said in an interview with Maxim, “I strongly believe that this is not a car that will be in production and we will not do it.” So why won’t Lamborghini pursue a hybrid exotic when other automakers such as Ferrari and McLaren are turning to the technology?

The main problem is weight and handling with Winklemann admitting that the Asterion is more of a “hyper-cruiser” with good acceleration and top speed but its handling would be beaten by others. But the technology found in the Asterion won’t go all to waste as the CEO did suggest that elements of the powertrain could find its way into the Urus SUV where it would be “easier in terms of packaging – the extra weight percentage-wise in a vehicle that is less relevant than on a light car like the super sports cars.”

Of course Lamborghini is open to the idea of a wealthy customer commissioning an Asterion but it wouldn’t be with the hybrid powertrain but with the V12 from the Aventador.
