Lamborghini Asterion Shelved for Urus SUV Production
The Lamborghini Asterion has been put on hold so that the Urus SUV can head to market by 2018.
In fact, it is now unlikely that the model will ever head to production, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann revealed in an interview with Autocar. That’s because although Lamborghini enthusiasts were “open to innovation, including hybrid technology,” they were only interested if it came with the benefit of added performance.
The Lamborghini Asterion made its debut at last year’s Paris Motor Show as a roomier, larger Lamborghini that had a hybrid powertrain. Instead of being geared towards track performance, the Asterion focused more on acting as the ultimate luxury cruiser, potentially expanding Lamborghini’s reach with a more approachable offering.

The Asterion combined the 5.2-liter V10 engine found in the Huracan with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a lithium-ion battery pack that resulted in a total system output of 910 hp. Even more impressive, Lamborghini noted that the Asterion was capable of returning 56 mpg on the EU test cycle, but alas, the Urus SUV is more important on the global market to increase sales and profits for the Italian automaker.
