The Mercedes-AMG GT Goes Hybrid For Big Power

201 horsepower. That’s the figure Mercedes says will be added to the AMG GT’s already substantial power output, coming courtesy of an electric motor placed on the rear axle of the recently updated coupe.

Thanks to its new electric parts, the AMG GT 63 S E Performance produces a combined 805 horsepower and up to 1,047 lb-ft of torque*. More on the asterisk in a moment. Two new drive modes have been added in conjunction with the hybrid powertrain: Electric and Battery Hold, though the brand doesn’t elaborate on what exactly the two new modes do. Presumably, Electric mode will move the car on electric power alone, but for how long isn’t clear. Battery Hold is in use on other Mercedes models and will conserve as much battery as possible while moving the car solely on combustion power. Battery regeneration via braking is available too and will be offered in four intensity levels, the highest of which enables EV-like one-pedal driving.

Other equipment, like the standard rear steer and carbon-ceramic brakes, is shared with existing GT models. However, the E Performance model also sees some new aesthetic changes to help differentiate it from its non-hybrid siblings. New tailpipes, red badge accenting, and E Performance badging all set the hybrid apart, alongside a set of more aerodynamically efficient 20-inch wheels. Of course, the car’s interior displays will also be updated to correspond with the new hybrid systems. Mercedes says the new model will hit dealers in late 2024.
