2020 Ford Escape Spied – Potentially With Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

The 2020 Ford Escape has been spied once again.

While the prototype pictured here is heavily camouflaged, it’s clear the next-generation Escape will draw heavily from the new-for-2019 Focus. The Escape will tap the new front-wheel-drive platform that debuted in the Focus and is also expected to feature the same 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine. Additonally, the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine offered in the current Escape may solider on as an upscale engine offering. Both the 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter engines will likely be paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

We’re told this prototype is a plug-in hybrid model, but there are so far little details on the electrified model variant. It’s clear that a hybrid and plug-in hybrid will be offered, however, as Ford is planning to axe the hybrid C-Max from its lineup. Additionally, with the demise of its other passenger cars (apart from the Mustang and the new Focus Active), Ford will be looking to offer as many Escape model variants as possible to ensure its customers don’t flock elsewhere.

We’re expecting the 2019 Ford Escape to make its debut late this year or early next year, before going on sale in the third or fourth quarter of 2019.
