Poll: Porsche 911 Turbo or Mercedes-AMG GT R?

If you’ve got 150 grand or more to blow on a new ride you really can’t make a mistake.

Well, you could, but you’d be a fool to pay that much for a “limited-edition” Cavalier Z24. At this rarefied price class, it all comes down to personal preference. Would you rather have rear- or all-wheel drive? Do you want a front-mounted engine or does something a little unconventional float your boat? What about brand prestige? Do you care?

In this poll we’re pitting Porsche’s always-enjoyable 911 Turbo against the equally sultry Mercedes-AMG GT R. For the sake of comparison, both cars are in coupe form, but that’s about where their similarities end.

Starting with Zuffenhausen’s offering, the legendary 911 features a rear-mounted flat-six. Displacing a relatively diminutive 3.8-liters but bolstered with twin turbochargers, this low-hanging engine delivers a blistering 540 horsepower (Turbo S models gain an extra 40 ponies) and 523 pound-feet of torque. With the optional Sport Chrono Package, it can hit 60 miles an hour in just 2.9 seconds. Terminal velocity is just shy of two bills.

In comparison, the AMG offering features a more traditional drivetrain. Its handcrafted, force-fed 4.0-liter V8 sits up front, sending torque to just the rear wheels instead of all four as in the Porsche. Still, there’s nothing wrong with old school, as this engine delivers 577 horses and 516 pound-feet of twist. Aided by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, the blast to 60 takes a frighteningly quick 3.5 seconds. Top speed perfectly matches its rival’s at 198 MPH.

The 911 Turbo is a bit faster in a straight line but the GT R Coupe probably looks a bit cooler, it’s also slightly more affordable. An entry-level version of the Porsche starts at about $163,000 including delivery fees, while the Mercedes-AMG kicks off at about 158 grand.
