Porsche's 911 GT2 RS Nurburgring Lap Time Could Start With a Six

The Porsche 918 Spyder is one of the few road cars to post a sub 7-minute lap time around the Nurburgring, but the new 911 GT2 RS may be right up there with the million dollar hybrid hypercar.

Porsche Motorsport boss Frank-Steffen Walliser hinted that the GT2 RS has lapped the 12.9 mile Nordschleife in under 7-minutes. It’s possible the GT2 RS proved to be even faster than the 887 horsepower 918 Spyder, seeing as the mid-engine hypercar didn’t dip too far into the 6-minute range with a lap of 6 minutes 57 seconds.

“This is the seventh generation of the 911,” Walliser told Motoring.” It’s all about sevens… It’s 700hp but it’s no seven at the Nurburgring.”

“Wait and see,” he added. “Give us some time and we will check it.”

With 700 horsepower on tap from its twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter engine, the GT2 RS seemingly has the hardware to back up Walliser’s claims. It tips the scales at a lowly 3,241 lbs and for an extra $31,000, you can shave another 40 lbs off with the available Weissach Package. The racecar-style aero should help stick it to the pavement, while its claimed top speed of 211 mph should help it down the Nurburgring’s long straights.

Porsche may not dethrone its own 918 Spyder with its GT2 RS, but it will at the very least be looking to take down the Lamborghini Huracan Performante. With active aerodynamics and some extra-sticky, non-production tires, the Huracan Performante monstered the ‘Ring in 6 minutes and 59 seconds.
