The 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 lapped the Nurburgring 12.3 seconds faster than the previous model.

The German automaker has announced the new Porsche 911 GT3 turned in a Nurburgring lap time of 7:12.7, beating the last model’s time by 12.3 seconds. The new track-focused GT3 made its debut earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show sporting 500 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque while tipping the scales at 3,153 pounds. Behind the wheel for the lap attempt was Porsche test driver Lars Kern.

Now that doesn’t make it the fastest production Porsche to ever go around the Nurburgring, since that honor belongs to the 918 Spyder with a time of 6:57. The 7:12.7 time does make the 911 GT3 one of the 10 fastest production cars ever to go around the Nurburgring, barely edging out the 2010 Dodge Viper ACR’s time of 7:12.13.

“By achieving this time, we have emphatically proven that the new 911 GT3 not only provides the best driving experience, but can also deliver an impressive performance on the Nordschleife. The focus was on optimising the driving quality and adapting to the slight increase in engine power”, says a delighted Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT cars at Porsche. “A few years ago, lap times like this could only ever be achieved by thoroughbred racing cars with slick tyres”, adds Andreas Preuninger, Director GT Product Line. “The new GT3 can now achieve this with comparatively modest power, but is still fully suited to everyday use.”
