You don’t need to go big to get home. Small off-roaders can be just as capable as larger utility vehicles. The Jeep Cherokee and Range Rover Evoque prove this, but which one is better? Let’s explore …
The Native-American-tribe-themed Jeep is motivated by one of two different engines: a base four-cylinder unit or an optional 3.2-liter version of FCA’s award-winning Pentastar V6. The latter option is good for 271 horses and 239 lb-ft of torque. The only transmission available is a nine-speed automatic.
Cherokees are also offered with a three, yes THREE different four-wheel-drive systems for claimed best-in-class off-road performance. Jeep Drive Active Lock is the most capable, providing a two-speed power-transfer unit, a dedicated low-range and even a locking rear differential for maximum grip in sloppy conditions.
As for the Range Rover, it features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, the sole engine offered in the U.S. It provides 240 horses and 250 lb-ft of torque, all of which is routed through a nine-speed automatic. Are you surprised? You shouldn’t be! This is essentially the same ZF gearbox used in the Cherokee.
The Evoque features an active driveline with rear-wheel torque-vectoring. This system can automatically switch between two-and four-wheel drive. It also has Land Rover’s Terrain Response system, which allows you to adjust how the vehicle behaves in different situations, from sand to mud and everything in between.

The Cherokee hands down. I have had the Evoque before, and it was a nightmare to drive, because of visibility, and a b..ch to maintain. I now have the V6 Cherokee Limited, and it is a pleasure to drive on and off the road. And while there have been issues reported with the 9 speed transmission (both of them use the 9 speed), I have had no maintenance issues whatsoever.
How about the one with a manual transmission? o, right... in that case, neither.
