McLaren 570S is Here to Hunt Porsches

McLaren just revealed its newest sports car on the eve of the 2015 New York International Auto Show.

By now you probably know it’s called the 570S, but what might not be quite as clear is that it’s part of the McLaren “Sport Series,” the third and entry-level tier for the British exotic car builder’s portfolio. For reference, that series sits underneath the Super Series (650S) and the Ultimate Series (P1). Like its more exclusive siblings, the 570S uses a carbon fiber monocoque chassis and a turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 that makes 562 hp (570 PS) and 443 lb-ft of torque. Official fuel economy estimates based on U.S. regulations aren’t available yet, but the car returned 25.5 MPG on the notoriously generous European test cycle. Perhaps most impressively, it achieves that power while skirting the gas guzzler tax.

The car send power to its rear wheels via a seven-speed sequential gearbox and comes standard with carbon ceramic brakes sitting behind wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires. It launches from 0-62 MPH (100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds and 124 MPH in 9.5 seconds with a top speed of 204 MPH.

McLaren also said today that the car comes with a revised version of its carbon fiber chassis that will be easier to get in and out of in anticipation of the 570S being a car its owners will drive more frequently than the 650S. It also gets a model-specific suspension that offers “normal, sport and track” settings to make it tolerable as a car to drive casually and during track lap days.

Leather upholstered sport seats are part of the standard equipment package, but customers can also pay extra for special racing seats. Similarly, an eight-speaker stereo is included at no cost, but there is also an optional 12-speaker system with 1,280 watts of power. Finally, McLaren is also offering a bespoke interior program similar to what it sells in the limited-edition 675LT.

The company didn’t officially announce pricing for the new model, but outlets are reporting that in Europe it will start at £140,000, or roughly $207,000. Some reports have even indicated it could be as low as $180,000. That price would put the 570S well below the Lamborghini Huracan and within range of products like the Porsche 911 Turbo.
