At the 2014 New York Auto Show, Land Rover announced the 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport, a new compact SUV that uses design cues and features based on its Discovery Vision Concept Car.

“I am proud to confirm the nameplate that will make Discovery a family of vehicles for the first time,” said Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern. “It will be called Discovery Sport and will go on sale in 2015.”

The confirmation also reveals that the Discovery name will be used for more than one vehicle. While the Concept debuted with seating for seven, Land Rover is saying that the Discovery Sport will be a compact model, making us think it won’t sport so many passenger seats. It’s unclear if the Discovery Sport will replace the current LR2.

The Discovery Vision Concept debuted with quite a few interesting features including the ability to be piloted remotely via a smart-phone app and a heads-up display that projected the terrain below the vehicle on the hood of the car. While these pie-in-the-sky features may not make the cut in the production Discovery Sport, the concept’s clean-looking exterior design and high-tech lighting system might just make the grade.
