2014 Lamborghini Aventador LP 720-4 50th Anniversario Roadster Video, First Look

Believe it or not this wild-looking machine is not the product of some secret military program. It may look like a stealth fighter but it’s actually built for the road. This is the Lamborghini Aventador 50th Anniversario Roadster.

This car is the flagship of the standard Lambo-linuep and it was just revealed at the Quail Motorsports Gathering. It’s a more open-air version of the Aventador Coupe that was unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show back in April.

The signature difference between this version and the coupe model has to do with the roof. The roadster features two removable carbon-fiber panels that each weigh about 13 pounds. They unlatch from the vehicle and stow up front in the trunk. When they’re locked in place over the occupants’ heads the roadster’s body is measurably stiffer. Compared to a power top, removable panels are both lighter and FAR easier to engineer.

The Anniversario Roadster is built around a full carbon fiber monocoque chassis with some aluminum bits thrown in for good measure. The lightweight metal actually helps conduct heat away from the car’s monster engine. A racing-grade push-rod suspension setup supports the car at all four corners.

This beast is powered by a 6.5-liter V12 that’s good for 720 horsepower and around 509 lb-ft of torque. It’s matched to a seven-speed ISR automatic transmission, which stands for Independent Shift Rod, something that helps it change gears faster.

The Lamborghini Aventador 50th Anniversario Roadster we experienced up close cost some $553,300, but don’t try to buy one. The company is only making 100 of them and they’re already sold out.
