The 2007-2008 Mazda CX-9 is under investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has said that about 54,000 Mazda CX-9 SUVs are under investigation for a possible suspension issue, after the agency received complaints that suspension parts can come loose. In total, NHTSA has received six complaints that the lower ball joint can separate from the suspension while the SUVs are in motion.

No crashes or injuries related to the possible issue have been reported, but investigators confirm that the complaints appear to show an increasing trend of problems.

The issue could possibly be tied to rust, as four of the six complaints came from states that use salt to clear roads in the winter. If the lower ball joint separates from the suspension while the SUV is being driven, it could cause drivers to lose control, increasing the risk of an accident.

NHTSA investigations can eventually lead to a recall, although this is just the first step of the process.
