Nissan Recall Under Investigation by NHTSA

A past recall campaign by Nissan is under investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a probe into a recall conducted in March 2014 that affected nearly one-million Nissan vehicles. The recall, which affected the 2013-2014 Altima, Leaf, Pathfinder and Sentra, 2013 NV200, 2013 Infiniti JX35 and 2014 Infiniti Q50 and QX60 vehicles, may need a new recall fix. In the original recall, the occupant classification system (OCS) software may incorrectly classify the passenger seat as empty even though it was occupied by an adult. As a result, the air bag may not deploy in the situation of an accident.

Since the recall was launched, NHTSA has received 124 complaints about problems with the system despite getting recall repairs. In some cases, the complaints allege the passenger air bag status light stays on for adult front passengers with other complaints stating that the dealers have made multiple repairs but the problem still lingers. The original recall fix was a software calibration change to improve the OCS algortithm.

The investigation will determine if the Japanese automaker needs a new recall fix.
