2014 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra Unveiled in Detroit

Chevrolet just unveiled its all-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks in Detroit.

The trucks feature three all-new engines — one V6 and two V8s with cylinder deactivation, continuously variable valve timing and direct injection. GM says these engines will be able to better manage towing loads in stressful conditions with less compromise in performance.

“Our customers rely on their trucks to meet the day-to-day challenges of earning a living, running a business and taking care of their families,” said Mark Reuss, president, GM North America. “Chevrolet is committed to giving truck customers the most-refined, best-engineered pickups in the market.”

Those three engines make up GM’s new family of EcoTec3 powerplants. First, there’s a 4.3-liter V6, which is followed 5.3-liter V8 and 6.2-liter.

GM also says the trucks get a stronger rear axle in the new generation.

“We believe these engines are the most technologically advanced engines ever offered in light-duty pickups, and they are specifically designed for the way customers use trucks in the real world,” said Jordan Lee, Small Block chief engineer and program manager.

While the engine is probably the most important part of what helps trucks sell, interior quality has become increasingly important.

For the first time, GM is offering heated cloth seats in its trucks. Apart from that, the cabin controls and center stack offer knobs and dials to make it easy to use with work gloves on. in both the Silverado and Sierra.

Of course, the GMC comes with a list of premium standard features, many of which are available as options on the Chevrolet.

Other practical additions include a “corner step” built into the rear bumper to make climbing in and out of the truck’s bed easier, forward collision alert and lane departure warning.

“We have made significant upgrades in the key areas of the new Silverado, and improved almost every detail of the truck,” said Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer for full-size and midsize trucks. “We think both Chevrolet loyalists and competitive shoppers are going to find a lot to love about the new Silverado, beginning with the very first time they sit behind the wheel.”

Chevrolet’s Z71 package also returns with an improved suspension for improved off-road capability. That includes monotube Rancho shocks, front two hooks, and a skid plate to protect the transfer case.

The Z71 package also comes with unique 18-inch wheels and all-terrain tires.
